About Us

Habitat Planning’s founder Steven Young is a Certified Wildlife Biologist (The Wildlife Society) with over 20 years of professional wildlife management and field research experience.

Steve had a very interesting early career working field research jobs studying ducks, seabirds, whales, fish, and more in such places as New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Labrador, the North Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea, and Washington State.  During this time, he also operated Poor Persons Photo  in Washington State.

After working on wildlife and fisheries field research projects for 6 years, Steve worked as an Environmental specialist with Fraser Papers, (a pulp and paper mill complex in New Brunswick Canada and northernmost Maine) for 8 years with responsibilities for water quality monitoring, landfill monitoring, and ambient air quality monitoring.  He also operated Young’s Photography as a part-time business beginning in 1988.

Steve served as the Wildlife Biologist for the Fraser Papers in New Brunswick, Canada, and Maine for 12 years, responsible for all wildlife management on the 2 million acres of Fraser-managed forest land in Maine and New Brunswick, Canada.  The Wildlife Biologist position was eliminated in 2004, when Fraser decided to sell their forest land.

In January of 2005, Steve opened One World Artisans with his wife Jan, offering stained glass art & supplies through www.oneworldartisans.com, photography through www.sjvphotography.com, and habitat planning through www.habitatplanning.com.

Steve received funding from the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, and the National Science Foundation’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Forest Biofuel Research Initiative (FBRI) in 2007 to conduct his Upper St. John Valley Community Forest Project.  This project will produce spatial forest models and forest management planning guidance to each community on the U.S. side of the Upper St. John Valley.
